A new book on slavery in Bermuda has been presented to Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith to commemorate February as Black History Month.Aimed at children of 11 and up, “Freedom’s Flames: Slavery in Bermuda and the True Story of Sally Bassett” was written by reading specialist and former middle school teacher Colwyn (Junior) Burchall. The book was presented on Mr Burchall’s behalf by Berkeley Institute teacher Tonisha Key-Holmes, who also helped put together the book’s content.Dame Jennifer praised it as “a wonderfully written piece aimed at younger readers”.She said: “Mr Burchall’s sensitive treatment of the subject matter allows young readers to more readily engage in a serious examination of the most distressing period in Bermuda’s history, through a textual lens that is both age-appropriate and entertaining.”
