Government should get on with the business of providing affordable housing or outsource the job ? to the Opposition United Bermuda Party (UBP), says Shadow Housing Minister Wayne Furbert.

This week the row over Government?s plans to build an extra 34 units of low rent housing at Prospect erupted again when the Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) applied for planning permission to go ahead with the disputed proposal.

Opposition Parliamentarians have sided with residents who oppose the scheme, while the Government says that the plans are not set in stone.

Housing Minister Ashfield DeVent accused the Opposition party of politicising the issue and challenged it to come up with a location for additional housing.

Mr. Furbert was quick to respond to the challenge.

?The Minister is challenging us like he is playing a game,? he said. ?It is unfortunate because the people of Bermuda are tired of game playing... ?

The UBP had announced during the election campaign last year that they would build 100 homes within two years.

They also proposed special economic zones which provided tax incentives for developers who provided affordable housing.

Last night, Mr. Furbert said that ?acres and acres? of Government owned land could be used for affordable housing.

?I laid out for the Government a long time ago that there are acres of properties the Government owns,? he said.

Asked where he would build the houses he said Tudor Hill, Southampton was one possibility.

?There?s 25 acres of property and part of the property there is zoned for housing. And all we are saying is we would probably start looking at that property first. You are allowed 20 units per acre.?

But he would not say how many houses the UBP would build at Tudor Hill.

Government had originally planned to build an extra 34 units at Prospect, but homeowners there say it would lead to a further deterioration of the quality of life there.

?Tell him (Mr. DeVent) to think outside the box,? Mr. Furbert continued. ?They call themselves the people?s government, get on with the people?s business. And if they do not know how to handle the housing problem, outsource that to the United Bermuda Party and we will get it done. They will still be the government but people will be getting housed. Outsource that and we will get it done for them.?

And he questioned where Government?s housing plan was ? after three PLP Housing Ministers.

?If the files have not been handed to him from the previous three Ministers I would like to reiterate once again what our plan is. Three Ministers said they had a plan ? would they lie to the people? He?s not generating a whole new plan is he? What were the other three getting paid for ??

He added that the previous PLP Ministers may owe the people a refund.

?But please tell the people of Bermuda what is the plan. And that?s my challenge to them. I want an answer in 24 hours,? Mr. Furbert said. ?They were voted in to get the work done. Get the work done. Or outsource.?
