Hurricane Igor: Airport busy as people flee Igor

The L.F. Wade International Airport was busy today (Saturday) as visitors fled Bermuda before Hurricane Igor’s arrival.

The airport will close at 6 p.m. today.

Jane Royden, of Birmingham, England, is waiting for the British Airways flight, which leaves at 5.20 p.m. — three hours earlier than normal.

“I got here early,” she said at 1 p.m. “I heard on the radio they were closing some roads that were vulnerable so I thought it best to leave a lot of time. We actually got the last taxi out of Fairmont Southampton.”

John Edwards, also from Birmingham, said he was sad to be leaving the Island. “This is our third visit and it was supposed to be a long one — 15 days. We were not supposed to leave until Friday.

“We didn’t mind staying for the hurricane but we heard how Fabian washed away some of the Causeway [in 2003] and we absolutely had to be in the UK next weekend. It was a difficult decision as we love it here but we will be back.”

An airport employee said most flights were on schedule for departure. American Airlines’ Miami and New York flights have been cancelled, as has the Delta flight to Boston.
