Machete attack victim making steady progress

The 28-year-old man left with a nine-inch gash in his skull after a brutal gang attack last week is out of the hospital's Intensive Care Unit and is now in a stable condition on a general ward.

Kuma Smith, from St. George's was set upon by four men on Parsons Road at around 2 p.m on Wednesday afternoon. The gang repeatedly hacked at him with machetes - severing one of his fingers in the process. Mr. Smith was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and underwent emergency surgery as doctors fought to save his life. A hospital spokesman yesterday confirmed Mr. Smith was “resting comfortably” on a general ward.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses of the attack to come forward.

Those with information are urged to call Chief Inspector Stuart Crockwell or Sergeant Jerome Laws on 299-4315 or 299-4239. Witnesses may also call the confidential Crime Stoppers Hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
