A Southampton man who imported almost $6,500 worth of cannabis apologised and said "it was stupid of me" on Friday in Magistrates' Court.

Shirra Yvon Lowry, 30, of Whaling Lane, was caught with the 126.9 grams of the illegal substance at the Bermuda International Airport, on January 20.

The court heard that Lowry had returned on a plane from Atlanta when drug-sniffing dogs were alerted to his bag. When his bag was checked it was found that he had 17 pallets of cannabis in the lining of a jacket.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman said that Lowry had told Customs officers that it was for his personal use.

Lowry said: "It was stupid of me. I just want to put this behind me."

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves fined him $1,000 or 90 days in prison.
