Man who wreaked havoc on Devil?s Hole is in custody
The Devonshire man who wreaked havoc in a Devil?s Hole neighbourhood on Wednesday morning, was taken into Police custody that afternoon.
Police reported that they arrested the 21-year-old man at a Cedar Park residence.
?They took him to St. Brendan?s Hospital? Paul A.W. Smith told yesterday. Mr. Smith is the owner of the car which was destroyed in a fire allegedly set by the man after he destroyed the wind shields of several cars at the Church Dale Road, Smith?s residence.
?We have mixed feelings about the arrest, but I?m really glad the Police took him to St. Brendan?s first,? said Mr. Smith.
He added that the families in Church Dale Road area had been worried about the man, who Mr. Smith said has history of mental illness.
Mr. Smith?s family, who had assisted the 21-year-old through the years, had requested that Police, if they must arrest the man, insure that he had psychological help.
The Police called the family at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday to inform them of the arrest.
?I haven?t spoken to him,? said Mr. Smith, but he did say he had communicated with the man?s mother. ?Apparently he was at his aunt?s house. His mother?s just glad that he?s getting help. He actually didn?t protest when the Police came to get him. He just got into the backseat.
?Yesterday, we were still a little concerned for our safety because we weren?t sure what he could do. But now, we?re just glad that someone has recognised that he needed some help.?
?All our vehicles are being repaired,? Mr. Smith said, adding that his brother, Vernon Trott, hopes to have his business, Island Trucking, running again by Monday.
