Mugging victim Josie Ray may be flown overseas for treatment after she was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Ray remains in a coma on a general ward but last night her daughter Carol Culver said she may be taken to a hospital in Boston for further treatment.

Mrs. Ray, the wife of William (Cheese) Ray, was attacked at the Southampton Post Office on Sunday, February 2.

She was retrieving mail from her mailboxes when the attacker struck, ripping at the handbag Mrs. Ray had secured over her shoulder.

Instinctively fighting for her bag, Mrs. Ray fell to the ground, striking her head and breaking her wrist.

The robber made off with her handbag. The bag was later found in some bushes nearby, however the $150 in cash it had contained was gone.

Mrs. Ray was taken to the hospital later that same day where doctors treated her for bleeding and swelling of the brain. She remained in critical condition in the ICU until Friday, when she was moved to the general ward in stable condition.

"The reason she was moved was because she didn't need the intensive care she was getting in ICU," explained daughter Carol Culver. "She's breathing on her own.

"But she's still pretty non-responsive at this point," she added. "She's in a coma."

Doctors are providing Mrs. Ray with care right now, she said. "But we're still in a wait-and-see position.

"It's sort of a helpless feeling: wait-and-see is just a bit of a nightmare, you can't do anything. We're just trying to stick together, to support each other."

Police have arrested a 17-year old youth in connection with the violent attack. The investigation is still on-going.
