The victim of a vicious gang attack is still in critical but stable condition in hospital.

Kuma Smith, 28, from St. George's, was apparently set on by four other men, who hacked at him with machetes on Parson's Road shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Mr. Smith suffered a nine-inch gash to his head along with major cuts to his arms in the attack and his finger was amputated.

He was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and underwent emergency surgery before being placed in the hospital's intensive care unit. Last night his condition was described as critical but stable.

Yesterday police issued a fresh appeal for witnesses of the attack to come forward.

Any witnesses are urged to contact Chief Insp. Stuart Crockwell or Sgt. Jerome Laws at the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315 or 299-4239. Witnesses may also call the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
