Police: Beware of tsunami scam
Online scam artists are trying to make a quick dollar out of the Asian tsunami disaster, Bermuda fraud Police have warned.
An ?unsolicited? e-mail or fax is currently being circulated which informs the recipient they have been selected to receive a ?cash reward?, in acknowledgement of their recent charitable donations to ?people in need?.
The e-mail claims the ?cash prize winner? has been selected at random, having recently used their credit card to make a donation. ?This is an old established scam,? a Police statement said.
?Unfortunately it has started to resurface recently as many of the recipients will have made credit card donations ? especially in relation to the recent tsunami. Some people may decide to provide their banking and/or other personal details in reply to these bogus e-mails. In the event that they do this, they will have become the victims of fraud. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then it is.?
