Police conduct raids in back of town
Two Police swoops into a Pembroke neighbourhood yesterday apparently put the pressure on a man wanted in connection with last week?s Parson?s Road machete attack.
The 23-year-old suspect contacted Police by phone after the second search and presented himself near the Deepdale Road and Happy Valley Road junction ? less than a quarter mile from the focus of the search ? around 5 p.m. and is now in Hamilton Police Station under questioning.
Three other men have already been charged in connection with the January 5 machete and garden hoe attack on Kuma Smith in which he allegedly received a life threatening wound to his head and lacerations to his body. A finger was also severed in the attack.
The first Police raid occurred around 11 a.m. as detectives reportedly acted on intelligence that the wanted man was in the neighbourhood.
Police Land Cruisers and dozens of officers blocked off the busy roads into the neighbourhood on the edge of Hamilton as other officers searched door to door for the suspect.
The entrance doors to two apartments in the area were damaged as officers busted into unoccupied residences. If Police?s urgent knocks were answered, occupants were ordered to stay inside.
Police later returned around 4 p.m. to continue their search.
Residents of the neighbourhood surrounding Curving Avenue and King Street North were assured by Det. Ch. Insp. Stuart Crockwell yesterday that the damage to their households during the Police raids would be mended ?before night fall?.
Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said later in the day that a joint Works & Engineering and Housing Corporation crew BHC was working ?feverishly? on the repairs.
When asked about the methods used during the search, Mr. Caines said that the Police would ?rather err on the side of caution? in searches, especially when ?dealing with some who is a very serious threat? as the suspect is alleged to be.
On Monday, Harron Lee Powell Evans, 29, of Tills Hill, Pembroke, and Davon Michael Marson, 27, of Happy Valley Lane, Pembroke, were both charged with attempting to murder Mr. Smith.
Jamiko St. Clair Mole Gibbons, 23, of Happy Valley Road, Devonshire, is also charged with having assaulted Mr. Smith and possessing an offensive weapon ? a machete ? at the time of the attack.
