Bermuda's new year began on a tragic note when a man was found dead at one minute after midnight in what Police say is a suspicious death.

Police would not disclose what injuries the 54-year-old Pembroke man may have suffered but it is understood there was blood at the scene and foul play has not been ruled out yet.

The man was found lying in a non-responsive state by a close family friend at a house in Market Lane, Pembroke, at one minute past midnight.

Emergency medical teams rushed to the house but were unable to save the man's life and he was declared dead at the scene.

A pathologist flies into the Island today to examine the body to try to determine how the man died.

Last night Police were refusing to disclose the man's name until all his family has been informed.

Fire spokesman Dana Lovell said yesterday that Fire received a call just after midnight from a woman who had began administering cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man but had stopped.

Police thought the death might be suspicious because there was blood at the scene, he added.

A Fire team was called to the house to provide lighting for Police officers.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday: “We have a pathologist coming to the Island tomorrow to examine the body. Emergency Medical Teams were called and the Pembroke man was pronounced dead on the scene.

“No further information will be given until the next of kin have been informed. Foul play has not been ruled out.”
