An inmate at Westgate Correctional Facility died yesterday after collapsing on the recreational grounds of the prison.

Ernest Hayes Johnston, 43, was pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital at 12.55 p.m. by the Department of Corrections medical doctor, according to a Government press release.

He collapsed on the recreational grounds at 11.30 a.m. and was rushed to the Westgate Medical Centre where he was treated by the Department of Corrections medical doctor and nursing staff.

Life support measures were initiated by the medical doctor until 11.45 a.m. when Mr. Johnston was rushed by ambulance to KEMH where he was later pronounced dead, said the press release.

The Police have initiated an investigation into Mr. Johnston?s death.

Mr. Johnston was convicted in Supreme Court in January, 2002 for breaking into Connections Plus boutique and stealing a cash register, cash, and four pairs of jeans.

He received three years probation but later breached that probation and was due to be sentenced in January, 2004.

It is understood that he was also remanded in custody on a charge of robbery at the time of his death.

Home Affairs Minister Randolph Horton said in a press release: ?I am saddened by the news of Mr. Johnston?s death and extend heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow, although there are no known suspicious circumstances.?
