Somerset residents are at the end of their tether over unsightly roadside trash which they say is shaming the neighbourhood.

Dumped mattresses and even boats have been spotted recently on private land next to the Gosling Brothers store on Cambridge Road.

Works and Engineering Minister said his department would clear the trash but he expressed frustration that residents were leaving stuff rather than using the free Government service to pick up bulky items.

He said: "We trade in our environment and most Bermudians take a pride in it.

"But it's the responsibility of the community not to throw stuff away in this way."

He said litterers could be prosecuted if they were caught but said positive identification of the culprits would be necessary.

Mr. Scott said Government trucks will pick up heavy items that can be lifted by two people such as stoves and refrigerators.

"There's a free service, that's what I can't understand. We are really disappointed people do this."

Several residents contacted The Royal Gazette to complain about the problem.

An employee of Gosling Brothers blamed people from the nearby Cambridge Court apartments for the mess.

He said: "This was done after Christmas. It's like they get a new bed and then throw the old one away across the street."

He said authorities removed the mess from time to time but it kept coming back.

"It's a disgrace. Tourists see it on the way to Cambridge Beaches and Daniel's Head village is nearby."
