Teachers at Prospect Primary, their union, and Government met yesterday to discuss the problem of mice in the building.

Students were taken into the assembly hall for classes as the staff and Bermuda Union of Teachers (BUT) demanded action be taken to deal with the mice, which have been seen in parts of the school since Hurricane Fabian.

It is thought the big storm disturbed their nests, and school principal Shangri-La Durham-Thompson had asked parents to put packed lunches in Tupperware boxes rather than bags to cut down on the problem. Teachers wanted to have the school tented over during the short break this month, but were told by the school facilities' manager that this was not feasible.

But at the meeting, it was decided the facilities' manager will work with other agencies including pest control during next week's holiday to sort the problem.

Mrs. Durham-Thompson said yesterday that she supported the teachers in their concern that the mice be removed.

She said the school janitor had put out traps and caught seven mice on Friday, three on Monday, and two yesterday.

"I called in the Health Department and they said mice can have as many as 12 babies, and I said there is no way I want these mice to breed," she said. "At a Parent teachers Association meeting I shared with the parents that there is a problem with mice and I said the parents have to help us by giving the children litter-less lunches.

"We've still got some mice and the teachers don't want the mice around the children. The teachers know I support them in their concerns."

Government's Department of Communication and Information Services released a statement yesterday that BUT general secretary Michael Charles stated he was "satisfied with the proposed plan and he is happy that the matter has been resolved amicable.

"During the school vacation next week, the facilities' manager will work with other agencies to further inspect the premises to get rid of any other problems and prevent any future occurrences," the statement read. "We expect that when the students return from school on February 16 that the problem will be resolved."
