Safety tips for women

Following a spate of recent attacks on women, the Bermuda Police Service issued the following safety tips yesterday:

If you need to walk alone, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Devices such as a Walkman limit your ability to stay alert.

Travel in well-lit areas only and choose your route carefully. Avoid setting patterns by alternating routes and times where possible.

Do not take shortcuts through isolated areas.

Carry a cellular phone if possible as well as a small flashlight and some kind of warning device like a three ounce air horn.

If you are aware of somebody following you make it obvious that you know he/she is there. Cross the road, walk towards a group of people or head towards a lit area.

In a car or a bike always check your gas regularly so you do not unexpectedly run out. Do not stop for strangers and always park in well-lit areas close to your destination.
