A Sandys man collapsed on the reception floor of the Somerset Police Station after being attacked with a chair on Wednesday night.

Police spokesperson Dwayne Caines said the man walked into the Somerset Police Station at 7.20 p.m. on Wednesday evening and collapsed in the reception area.

“He stated that a suspect had taken a chair and struck him on the right arm and shoulder area,” said Mr. Caines. “The force was so great that it broke the chair apart.”

Fire personnel arrived on the scene shortly afterwards to attend to the man's wounds until the ambulance arrived.

Back to back accidents

Two motorcycle riders were injured when their vehicles collided at a junction in Warwick on Wednesday.

The Fire Service was called to the scene to provide emergency medical treatment to riders, said spokesman Lt. Anthony Caisey.

The male cyclist, travelling west on South Shore Road, was making a right hand turn onto Cobb's Hill in Warwick at about 8.30 p.m. when he collided with a female cyclist travelling east on South Shore.

The male cyclist suffered an ankle injury, while the female cyclist suffered injuries to her mouth and head. And a male motorcyclist was rescued from beneath a truck by onlookers after an accident further west on Middle Road.

Lt. Caisey said the accident occurred near White's Supermarket a little after 9 p.m. Although he could not say how the accident occurred, he said the cyclist ended up trapped beneath a truck.

Onlookers raised the truck and pulled the cyclist out from underneath before rescue services could arrive. The cyclist suffered leg injuries as a result of the collision.

Handbag stolen

A stylish thief made off with a designer handbag, wallet and $200 in cash.

The theft occurred at a Trimingham Hill, Paget home between Tuesday evening and 9.30 a.m. Wednesday morning. The victim told officers that her wallet also contained credit cards and other personal items.

Clothes dryer burnt

A clothes dryer caught on fire causing $900 damage to apartments in Washington Lane, Pembroke, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Bermuda Fire Service spokesman Lt. Anthony Caisey said: “The dryer was completely destroyed in the fire. We believe that the fire happened because of the dryer overheating.

“Sometimes dryers overheat because the lint has not been removed. Two firefighters had to don breathing apparatus equipment in order to extinguish the fire.” No one was hurt.

Belco has power outage

A BELCO pole fire in Pembroke occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Bermuda Fire Service reported.

The fire happened at 5.21 a.m. on Stovell Bay Road in Spanish Point.

Bermuda Fire Service spokesman Lt. Anthony Caisey said: “These fires sometimes happen on the high voltage lines when they do not have the rubber guards on them. The occurrence usually happens when there are high winds and the lines rub together.

“The firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in ten minutes by using a mist of water rather than a direct stream.”

BELCO spokesman Linda Smith said: “The wires arced because of the high winds. The pole will need to be replaced as it received burn damage during the fire. No customers were affected as a result of the fire.”
