Famed African-American film director Spike Lee will be visiting the Island later this month.

The director is renowned for his bold and artistic interpretation of controversial film subjects such as 'Malcolm X', 'Summer of Sam' and 'Do The Right Thing'. He will be speaking to young film enthusiasts and admirers at the Fairmont Southampton Princess Hotel on January 30.

Dr. Michael Orenduff. president of the Bermuda College said: "The Bermuda College decided to bring in Mr. Lee as part of their speakers series.

"We are still waiting to hear exactly what Mr. Lee's topic for the night will be, but he has recently released a new movie and published a children's book. We are delighted to have a person of his stature in Bermuda, at the invitation of the College.

"His talents are multi-faceted, and include writer-director, actor, author and producer."

Over the years, Mr. Lee has shown a willingness and artistic ability in provoking thought on very real issues of the day, such as racial tensions, male and female relationships and youth learning to cope in a complex society.

This made him an ideal candidate for the Bermuda College speakers series.

"Just about all of Spike Lee's works stimulate thought and discussion, and at Bermuda College, that's what we seek to develop and encourage in our students.

"At the same time, as a community college, we wanted to do something that would embrace and appeal to the general community, and we think Spike Lee fits the bill perfectly," added Dr. Orenduff.

Before flying out on January 31, Mr. Lee will also take part in a walkabout at the college.

Bermuda College media relations officer Evelyn Barnett said: "He will take part in a classroom discussion, so that students can question him on his work in an informal setting."

Tickets for the talk will be on sale at the Bermuda College from January 22 and will cost $40. Ticket sales will help offset some of the College's costs for bringing Mr. Lee to the Island.
