A vagrant was jailed for three months yesterday for carrying an offensive weapon.
Sinclair Lewis Fox, 57, told Police who found a knife on him on January 28 that it was "for my protection".
He pleaded guilty to the charge but told Magistrates' Court yesterday: "I didn't mean it like that. It just slipped out of my mouth." He claimed he had simply found the knife and put it in his pocket.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: "I do not accept that explanation. I find therefore that he was in possession of an offensive weapon."
He sentenced Fox, formerly of the Salvation Army shelter, to three months in jail to run concurrently with a six-month sentence imposed earlier in the week for theft.
