The controversial vicar of St. Mark's is set to be asked to resign today after a special members meeting unanimously backed calls for him to go.

Around 30 members of the Smith's church met in November with many angry speeches denouncing Rev William Hayward.

The Royal Gazette understands members were asked if they wanted Rev Hayward to resign and no one spoke up in his defence.

Church numbers at St. Mark's have dwindled as worshippers complained Rev. Hayward regularly turned up late and gave uninspiring sermons.

They also alleged he had no ability to deal with the church's mounting debt and they would prefer a married rector.

Church Warden William S. Zuill yesterday said: "We have a vestry meeting tomorrow and we will discuss the situation with Rev Hayward."

But he refused to comment further until the outcome of the meeting.

One parishioner said last night the situation was getting desperate. She said: "They might have to close the church if there is no congregation.

"Sometimes they get 25, other days they get nine. There is no leadership."
