A burglar stole thousands of dollars of jewellery and cash from a guest safe at Horizons Cottages.

The German couple said their haul went missing between 8.30 a.m. and 1.45 p.m. on Thursday.

Last night Horizons Ltd. President and CEO George Wardman said it didn't appear as if the safe was forced.

He said the wealthy couple had been coming to Horizons for the last seven years.

"They feel like they have been abused, their privacy has been invaded," said Mr. Wardman. "They are upset because they believed Bermuda was safe and peaceful. They are disappointed.

"It sounds to me like they were travelling over an extended period of time with some jewellery and cash, a necessary amount for the journey."

Asked how the safe could be cracked he said: "I have no idea, I am not even able to venture an opinion on that.

"There is only one key for that safe. It's registered with the manufacturer."

He said he believed the key wouldn't be duplicated by any reputable locksmith.

"It did appear there was no forced entry into the safe.

"The staff have served over many, many years. It's an extremely rare occurrence."

He said security was taken very seriously at the establishment.

Items stolen include a square gold and diamond face Cartier tank watch, a round gold face Chopard watch with moving diamonds inside and a blue crocodile leather band, a gold necklace with pearls and jade all around with a matching bracelet, a very old white gold bracelet with rubies, a white gold wire necklace with a diamond cross pendant containing four triangular shaped diamonds and a gold frog shaped brooch covered with diamonds and two blue sapphire eyes with legs of gold which move.

Also stolen were a white gold ring with a large diamond on top and smaller diamond attached to the side and a gold ring with three coloured square sapphires (pink, yellow, and blue) and small diamonds to the ends.

A gold necklace with a Chopard gold-fish pendant (clear body with diamonds inside with a blue sapphire eye), a white gold ring with a sapphire in the middle surrounded by diamonds, a gold ring with large blue sapphires and a gold wedding ring surrounded with 12 larger diamonds and four gold bracelets (one with rubies, one with emeralds, one with sapphires and one with diamonds) were also taken.

Also stolen from the safe were a brown Louis Vuitton card holder, a brown crocodile skin wallet, $2,570 worth of Euros, ?200 and US$5,000.
