We need your help
The Bermuda Red Cross wants to hear from volunteers willing to be shipped out to South Asia to help with the tsunami relief effort.
But the charity is not looking for any volunteers ? only technically trained delegates who would be able to provide expert assistance.
If you have some form of technical training in the field of disaster management, finance, water and sanitation, community health or logistics and want to help, then the Bermuda Red Cross might be able to use you.
Bermuda Red Cross Director, Ann Spencer-Arscott said if people were really keen they could forward their details of what training or expertise they have and the Red Cross would look at the possibility of adding them to their delegate register.
It could take up to ten years for countries in South Asia effected by the deadly tsunamis to make a full recovery.
Total funds raised in Bermuda so far by the Red Cross is $516,571.
Internationally the Red Cross has already spent close to ?10 million on the emergency phase and with donations flooding in for the relief effort, they?re now also being inundated with calls from the public offering their services.
Mrs. Spencer-Arscott denied a suggestion that charities were now competing against each other while raising funds for the tragedy which has killed more than 150,000 people.
?There are legitimate expenses associated with any fundraising and whilst some charitable organisations might have higher expenses, please realise that the bottom line should be that at least there is something being done to help others less fortunate,? she said.
She said the response from members of the public and businesses has been phenomenal.
In a breakdown of how the donations were being spent, The British Red Cross yesterday issued the following figures: Six warehouse tents valued at ?60,000, 19,925 kitchen sets which includes cookware for a family valued at ?134,787.16, 85,000 blankets valued at ?126,459.45, 100,000 tarps valued at ?533,513.51 and 17,900 body bags valued at ?128,900.
