ABC pulls programme on tourism ad controversy

Tourism Minister Renee Webb

The 20/20 piece on the Bermuda Tourism Department's misrepresentation of the Island during an ad campaign - due to be aired tonight - was temporarily pulled yesterday.

The moves comes after Tourism Minister Ren?e Webb was told by a local resident that American Airlines had a full-page advertisement featuring one of Bermuda's North Shore beaches.

The full-page article in the New York Times travel section on May 27 featured the Shelly Bay Beach in an American Airlines ad, which mentioned the company flying to Europe, the Caribbean and to Mexico, with no mention of the Island.

The ABC News show was covering a row over the Department of Tourism accepting stock photos from Hawaii in its recent adverting campaign. Ms Webb said she informed 20/20 presenter John Stossel of her discovery.

She later received a call saying they would be pulling the piece and would ring to let her know when and if it would run in the future.

"I thought that they would have just added the fact that American Airlines had used Shelly Bay Beach and not mentioned Bermuda as a foot note in the piece, but Mr. Stossel said that he would let me know when they would run it," said Minister Webb.

"It would have been good publicity for the Island - our beaches sell themselves.

"It goes to show that using stock photos is normal practice - and any one who had worked in marketing would have known this." was unable to reach the ABC News media relations spokesman last night.
