Accident victim fights for life

A 47-year-old motorcyclist was fighting for his life last night after suffering serious head injuries when he struck a utility pole on Middle Road on Sunday.

Police said the man, who is from Hamilton parish, lost control of his cycle at around 10.50 p.m. on Middle Road, Southampton near the junction of Tribe Road No. Six.

?It appears that a motorcycle was travelling west on Middle Road when the rider lost control, scraping along a wall and colliding with a utility pole,? a Police spokesman said. ?The victim was taken to KEMH for treatment of head injuries.?

Police said that no other vehicles were involved in the collision, however, they were not a liberty to say whether the man had been speeding, or drinking alcohol. A large portion of Middle Road in Southampton was closed to traffic on Sunday night as Police Road Traffic Collision Investigators examined the scene.

The blockade extended from Church Road to the junction with Lighthouse Road for several hours, Police said.

Last night a spokeswoman from clinical programmes at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital said the victim remained in critical condition on a life support machine in the hospital?s Intensive Care Unit .
