Captain Robert Spurling has two reasons to celebrate.

He is three weeks into his new job as Aide-de-Camp for Governor Sir John Vereker. And just last weekend Capt. Spurling got engaged to American Sarah Epstein.

The ADC post marks the fulfilment of a lifetime ambition for the 25 year old, although he already knows he is not in for an easy ride.

?It is a very busy job but interesting ? I have different challenges every day.?

As the personal staff officer to the Governor, he is responsible for the official engagements of Sir John and Lady Vereker.

The two-year post includes the duty of escorting Sir John to official events and managing the staff at Government House.

The former Saltus Grammar School student is also responsible to the director of Human Resources in the Cabinet Office for the terms and conditions of service of all Government employees working in Government House.

To become an ADC one has to be an officer in the Bermuda Regiment and be interviewed by Commanding Officer Eddie Lamb and Sir John.

As an Honorary ADC for about nine months ? standing in for former ADC Derek Hurdle ? he had an advantage over anyone else applying for the position. It also helped him ?get a feel? for his current post.

With a touch of modesty Capt. Spurling said the interviews did not go ?too badly?.

?The Governor already knew me from being an Honorary ADC.?

Capt. Spurling, who went to the University of Georgia, said his new position would bring him good networking experiences.

?I am really looking forward to meeting different people.?

He added the job would also help him develop his management skills.

Capt. Spurling has been in the Bermuda Regiment for the past four years.

A Platoon Commander for the past two years, he recently completed a Platoon Tactics Course in Wales.

Before his new post, Capt. Spurling worked for Deloitte as a chartered accountant.

The company gave him a two-year leave so he could fulfil his new duties.

Capt. Spurling is also an avid golfer and spear fisherman ? activities which provide a welcome break from his new duties.
