Plans to build 200 new homes at Southside have been welcomed by members of the public.

The Royal Gazette hit the streets of Hamilton to see what the public thinks about the plan that will see about 100 of the homes restricted for income-qualified buyers starting at $195,000.

The Government/private sector initiative was announced by Housing Minister Ashfield DeVent on Friday.

Most of the people responded with positive remarks, pointing out that the scheme will create more affordable homes on the Island.

Hope Jones said there was a need for more houses but questioned why the Government wouldn't use housing that is already available. "Why are they going to condemn the houses that already exist and are empty and waste money," she said.

"There is a need for housing or a drop in rent because people are working from pay cheque to pay cheque."

George Burt said the critics needed to stop bringing down the Government and its plans.

"We need housing and I'm going to come down on the critics because it is definitely needed," he said.

After being away from the Island for several years, Kristine Pereira said she had seen a large increase in property prices.

"It's a good idea for people who can't afford the Bermuda prices," she said.

"They should have the option of affordable housing especially for first time home owners."

Dornette Webb agreed that first time home owners should be given a chance to buy affordable housing.

"I think it's an excellent idea that will give people, especially first time home owners, a chance to own their own home," she said.

Richard Exon said the housing market was "overheated" making affordable housing necessary.

He said: "It really needs to be done because there really is a shortage of affordable housing. This should have been done a few years ago."

No matter where the Government plans to put housing Darren Edwards said it is necessary.

"It's an excellent plan and is very much needed. Wherever it goes is not important. It's needed, that's important."

Carolyn Y. Williams said that with the room at Southside the plan was a good idea.

When asked she said: "Absolutely, it's a good idea."

Blaine Tucker said: "Down at Southside they're building up a nice community and they can begin putting people down there. There is a lot of space down there and a need for affordable housing. I think it's a good idea."

Darren Brangman said he believed it would be a good idea. "It will be good as long as they keep it affordable and for those with low income."

Bobby Miller added: "As long as they take care of the poor. They need these houses and as long as they're not overpriced it will be good."
