The coordinators of this year's Bermuda International Airshow have cancelled the much anticipated Blue Angels show.

The Blue Angels, officially known as the US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, were going to come for the weekend airshow.

The show ? scheduled for June 12-13 at the Bermuda International Airport ? was organised by the Airborne Foundation.

Lt. Mike Blankenship, spokesman for the Blue Angels, said organiser Kurvin Spence had contacted the public affairs office to cancel the airshow.

"It was their decision to call it off but they did not give us a reason whether it was financial or safety reasons," Lt. Blankenship said.

"I'm sure there were several problems involved," he added.

One of the Blue Angels' jets arrived in Bermuda for a sneak peek at the beginning of January. The plane was carrying Maj. Chandler Seagraves who briefed organisers on preparing for the June event.

The Blue Angels will now perform in La Crosse, Wisconsin on June 12 and 13.

"We're pretty bummed that we won't be able to come," Lt. Blakenship said. "Hopefully they will reconsider the application for the next year."

Airborne Foundation founder Mr. Spence did not wish to comment. The Airborne Foundation is hoping to raise awareness among Bermudians about flying and will be raising money to benefit scholarships for flight school.
