Another homeowner seeks answers to BHC's fuzzy math
Yet another homeowner who undertook renovations with Bermuda Housing Corporation is questioning the corporation's practice of billing clients without itemising costs.
Cobb's Hill resident Jennifer Simmons went public this week complaining that BHC sent a contractor to her home who botched her renovation job and then sent her bills that did not detail the work done on her home.
Her home is still not finished, Ms Simmons told electronic media, and she has been informed by Planning that she shouldn't be living in the home as it is.
Ms Simmons experience rang true with another BHC client who contacted The Royal Gazette on Thursday.
The woman - who asked not to be named - told The Royal Gazette she approached BHC about renovating her two-bedroom home on Mount Hill Road.
"I went to BHC in August, 2000 to do renovations on my home," she said.
The work took place between August and November, she added, and while she has been happy with the work that was done on her home, she wants to know exactly what she paid for.
"We brought in our own contractors," she said. "(The Corporation) offered to supply us with contractors but we said 'no, we'll use this contractor'."
Although the job was completed well over a year ago, she added, she has been asking for a detailed cost inventory of what was done to her home ever since.
"I have repeatedly asked BHC for an itemised list and I still don't have one," she said. "It is always excuses."
The homeowner said, in the face of the recent allegations about BHC, she is left wondering what she was actually billed for.
After allegations of corruption, kickbacks and double-billing were raised in the House of Assembly last week, a full investigation by Government Auditor General Larry Dennis has been launched into the Corporation's practices.
"Did I really pay for two doors, or, did I pay for three," the homeowner asked. "How can I know?
"I know that I have two doors but how do I know that is what was actually included in my bill?
"All I got was a blanket price. I had to pay, I want to know what it was for, exactly."
