Bermuda has enough antibiotics to deal with any possible bioterrorist attack, Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Cann (pictured) said yesterday.

He said after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and health care providers looked at contingency plans, based on the Y2K scare, and concluded three months' supplies would be needed. The Island now has that.

Dr. Cann said the likelihood was that it would be Americans or overseas visitors who would be affected if there was an anthrax incident which involved Bermuda.

"We feel that we have a more than adequate supply when it comes to antibiotics," he said at a press briefing at Cabinet Office yesterday called after the scare.

"It is extremely unlikely we will have a large number affected and it is unlikely Bermudians would be directly affected. It is most likely that Americans or people travelling on a plane or some other entity affected and we would have to deal with that, and that is manageable with the resources we have to hand," he said.
