Father of two denies biting estranged wife

A 28-year-old father of two from Devonshire appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday on charges of assaulting his estranged wife.

Jahmaine Coddington pleaded guilty to the charge of assault, but not guilty to biting her on January 13.

Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that Coddington had gone to his estranged wife's house to collect her and his 18-month-old daughter.

Mr. Mahoney said Coddington and his estranged wife got into a heated argument and when she handed the baby to a friend he pushed her to the ground.

He said she fell on top of her friend and the baby when Coddington beat her.

Coddington told the court he was sorry, but said his estranged wife was always “in his face”.

He told Acting Magistrate Mark Pettingill that he gave his wife a “ringing slap” but never bit her.

Coddington's wife was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital following the incident and, according to medical reports presented in court, she was treated for a bite to her upper arm, bruising and had been punched in the face.

Mr. Pettingill said he had recorded Coddington's guilty plea, while adding that other facts remained in dispute.

Coddington, who was released on $1,000 bail and represented by Michelle St. Jane, will return to court this morning at 11.30 a.m. for trial.
