A Pembroke teen received a hefty fine for cocaine and cannabis possession, in an increased penalty zone.

But his mother helps him to get an extension on paying.

Ryan Wong, 17, was arrested on January 26 by Police outside the Pembroke Community Centre, which is an increased penalty zone.

Police searched Wong and found what turned out to be 0.49 g of cannabis and 40g of cocaine in paper twists in his pocket.

Wong's Mother was in court on Thursday and asked Senior Acting Magistrate Carlisle Greaves to give her son an extended period of time to pay the $3,500 in total fines.

"He's just starting work next week on a new job." she told Mr.Greaves.

"Can he have some extra time to pay."

Mr.Greaves gave Wong until the end of August to pay the fines.

After brandishing a machete at a man in St. George's and threatening to cut his head off, Cabun Joell was fined $500 in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

But the 25-year-old Warwick man denied driving while impaired on the night of his arrest. He also denied that his blood alcohol level was over the legal limit, so Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves released him on $1,000 bail. He will be tried in August on the charge.

The court was told that Joell brandished the machete and said: "I will chop your head clean off" on the night in question.

Joell said yesterday that his would-be victim had "gripped a golf club", leading him to produce the machete from his car.

Joell was fined $500 for possession of an offensive weapon and $500 for using offensive words.

A 54-year-old cruise ship passenger from Rhode Island was fined $1,000 in Magistrates' Court yesterday for importing marijuana.

Mary Pilderian admitted having 2.03 grams of cannabis before Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves.

More than 70 people have been fined $1,000 or more each for importing drugs this year.
