New trial date for Guatemalan drug accused

A Guatemalan national facing importation charges will be arraigned for a new trial date the Supreme Court heard yesterday. Silvia Yahira Mejia Esquival, 27, is charged with importing cocaine and being in possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Her trial was due to begin yesterday, but her lawyer Larry Scott was not ready for trial. Acting Chief Justice Norma Wade Miller set the matter down for the January Arraignments Session.

Two charged with drug offences

Two men appeared in Magistrates Court yesterday to face indictable charges of possession and intent to supply cocaine in St. George?s .

Patrick Newton Stamp, 18, of Middle Town Road, Pembroke and Garnell Lamont Hollis, 24, of Abbot?s Cliff Drive, Hamilton Parish, were granted bail at $5,000 and a surety each.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves told both men to surrender their travel documents and to be back in Magistrates Court for mention on December 17.

Nintendo thief fined

A man pleaded guilty with an explanation yesterday in Magistrates Court for stealing a Nintendo Game Cube and a game.

Kuma Kenie Smith, 27, of Turkey Hill, St. George?s, told the court: ?I was seeing the daughter of the complainant and she let me borrow the game. I left it at a friends house and it disappeared. She needed to give her mom an explanation so she said I stole it.?

The games were stolen from a house in Sandys on January 18, 2002 and were valued at $659. Magistrate William Francis fined Smith $800 with $659 of that amount to go to the complainant.
