Bermuda Aviation Services (BAS) is pulling out of the airline catering business after 57 years, can reveal.

Struggling airlines have been drastically cutting back on food for passengers for the past decade and BAS now feels it is no longer profitable.

British Airways, which flies to London, is the only airline which orders a substantial amount of its catering from Bermuda.

Other airlines serving Bermuda from the United States and Canada now offer just snacks or nothing at all, and these are sourced in North America.

BAS?s decision to pull out of catering means BA has been forced to look for another local company to provide its food. Failing this, BA will need to get all its food from London for the round trip flights, which will mean putting refrigerated containers in the hold. But the airline is hoping to avoid this because it would cut into cargo space.

Three quarters of the 14 catering staff at BAS?s kitchens at the Airport have been offered other jobs within the BAS group of companies, but the others will be made redundant.
