Opposition Senator yesterday urged Government to convene a youth summit which would allow Bermuda?s young to express their frustrations.

During the Upper Chamber?s motion to adjourn, Sen. Bascome said that he was pleased to read that the Premier was addressing social and ?quality of life? issues.

?They should have been the issues for the initial PLP Government,? he said. ?But I would take the opportunity to thank the Premier for endeavouring to address the social needs of the community.?

He then turned to the behaviour of some of the Island?s young, and said ?we need to allow our young people the opportunity to take the lead and soon?.

He said a youth summit would give the young an opportunity to ?take centre stage and explain some of the things they believe is not being done to enhance their opportunities in this country.?

Failure to properly address the behaviour of our youth, he said, would lead to ?severe problems? in the country.

?Throughout Bermuda there are little pockets of disenchanted young people and all they are asking for is for someone to come forward as a leader.?

He said it was really up to legislators to take action and denied that he was supportive of antisocial behaviour. ?I do not support negative behaviour, I just have a healthier degree of tolerance and I?m just one person who has taken it upon himself to put himself on the frontline,? he said.

?If we do not take heed of some of the negative behaviour in this country, we are going to be in severe problems in this country.?
