Government Sports officials and youth baseball leaders yesterday came to an agreement to allow the youngsters to continue their league even though a "monster truck rally" will be held on their pitches.

The Youth Athletic Organisation (YAO) feared it would be unable to complete its ten week season after receiving a letter from Government last week telling it to leave the Kindley community fields at Southside from June 3-12 to make way for the giant truck show.

But following a meeting yesterday between YAO and Community Affairs and Sports officials, the baseball league will be able to continue playing on June 8 and practising at nights.

Organisers of the league, which is enjoyed by 400 youngsters, feared they would not be able to continue the season if games were disrupted because many children would then go overseas for holidays after the schools broke up.

The monster truck event - details of which will be revealed shortly - will be able to go ahead on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings (June 7-9) with special protection for the pitches.

Community Affairs and Sports Minister Randolph Horton said yesterday he was delighted both sides had been able to reach an amicable agreement.

"It is very important for people to sit down and discuss the total circumstances of the situation and I am very pleased that everyone came together," he told The Royal Gazette.

"We looked at each and every avenue because in my view, its always a win-win situation if people put their heads together and have some empathy for the other group.

"This monster truck event is a new and exciting activity for Bermuda and that was the reason we moved so quickly on it.

"The Ministry was able to offer the YAO some suggestions and assistance in extending the YAO programme in the future and has arranged for them to financially benefit from the monster truck event by operating their food stall during the rally event."

After the meeting, YAO president Bill Jack said: "We were able to get a good resolution. It is very workable and I was very pleased.

"With a little accommodation on their part and a little on ours we were there.

"It is going to be very workable and we are able to get our games so we can get a result at the end of the season, which was the key thing."

The YAO will also get a financial boost from the monster truck event as it will be able to have its concession stalls at the three evenings of the monster truck event.
