Neighbouring residents who may have spotted smoke billowing from the Bermuda Electric Light Company (Belco) yesterday morning, were assured that it was a minor mechanical malfunction.

According to corporate communications manager, Robin Sidders Belco had been restarting one of their diesel engines which had been dormant for three months.

The restart process highlighted a problem with the injection system, causing a cloud of black smoke to be released.

She said in an effort to do regular maintenance on the engines, it is necessary to shut them down for a period of time, but yesterday's problem was resolved within 15 minutes.
