Belco workers avert strike

Bermuda Electric Light Company staff are no longer threatening to stage a strike after voting at a union meeting on Thursday in favour of a resolution in their pay dispute.

Electricity Supply Union members had threatened to walk out on January 31 over a dispute about salary scales and job reclassification.

Mediation talks between the union and managers broke down at the end of last week and the matter was to be referred to the Permanent Arbitration Tribunal in line with provisions in the Labour Relations Act.

However, Belco spokeswoman Linda Smith said yesterday that an agreement had been reached at the meeting.

"We are pleased this situation has been resolved," she said.

No one from the Electricity Supply Union could be reached for comment yesterday.
