Island showcased on BET networks

Bermuda was seen in 134 million homes thanks to Black Entertainment Television (BET).

Last night the 2004 Bermuda Music Festival pre show aired on BET and BET Jazz.

“The hour long pre-show is part of the Bermuda Department of Tourism's intense promotional campaign to raise awareness of the upcoming 2004 Bermuda Music Festival, which will be held at the Royal Naval Dockyard on October 7, 8 and 9,” a Government spokesperson said.

The pre-show will run tonight on BET Jazz at noon, 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. It will also air at various times from August 28 to September 25.

Pair detained by Police

Two men spent Friday night in the Police cells under suspicion of drunk driving.

At 9.45 p.m on Friday, Police spotted a vehicle swerving from left to right and crossing over the centre line on Malabar Road, Somerset.

He was arrested and taken to Somerset Police Station where he was searched and detained.

Three hours later, Police received calls from members of the public about a car they had seen driving in an erratic manner.

Police caught up with the driver on North Shore Road where they pulled him over.

Smelling liquor on his breath, he was taken to the closest Police station where he was searched and detained.

Salvation Army in cost-cutting move

Making the best use of its assets, The Salvation Army has decided to rent out its Reid Street office. The office, which served as the church's administrative headquarters for several years, will become a boutique and salon according to head of the Salvation Army, Major Lindsay Rowe.

The administrative offices have moved to the church's North Street, Hamilton site which Major Rowe said is more economical.

He said the move also made sense because it consolidated all the church's administration on one floor.

In April the Salvation Army had to lay off staff and close the kitchen at its emergency housing shelter due to changes in the Employment Act.

Major Rowe said this latest move was not prompted by any reduction in Government funding or private donations.
