UBP hosts Good Friday Kite Fest

The United Bermuda Party will be hosting its annual Good Friday Kite Festival next Friday at Horseshoe Bay from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Kite categories include children (ten and under), youths (11-17), adults (18 and over), largest kite, smallest kite and best visitor's kite. Kites must be home-made and plastic is barred.

Registration takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Spectators choose the best kite by volume of applause with judging starting at 1.30 p.m.

Other events include a locals versus visitors tug-of-war and a tug-of-war between UBP MPs and candidates versus the public.

Chester Trott, from the Kite Flyers Over Bermuda, will demonstrate how to make a paper kite while Rodney Smith will provide fish cakes.

Games, kite-making and face painting is free. Food and drink will be on sale. In event of rain the day will be moved to Sunday April 11 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Waste site to close

From Saturday, the temporary horticultural waste disposal site at Morgan's Point, Southampton will be closed.

The public are advised to take horticultural waste to the Marsh Folly Composting Facility via the Glebe Road entrance.

Works and Engineering and Housing Permanent Secretary Derrick Binns said the Morgan's Point site was probably the last temporary site to close after taking waste generated by Hurricane Fabian.

Road to be repaired

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on a portion of Shelton Road near Tribe Road Number Three in Devonshire for up to six months while a supporting wall for that unsafe section of road is built.

Motorists who have to travel on Happy Valley Road are advised to travel slowly and exercise caution. Traffic will be controlled by lights.

Police probe break-ins

Police investigated nine break-ins over a busy weekend which also included three arrests on suspicion of drunk driving, and 24 road traffic collisions, five of which resulted in injury.

Thieves broke into homes in Paget, Smith's, St. George's, Sandys, and Hamilton Parish, Police said.

At 1.45 a.m. yesterday, Police attended a reported breaking and entering t a Third Avenue Pembroke residence. The complainant said that at around 1.30 a.m. she woke up and saw an unknown man in her hallway. The man escaped when he realised he had been seen.

The suspect is described as a white or light skinned male, six feet tall of medium build.

Intruder disturbed

A woman disturbed a would-be intruder in her home last week.

The Cobb's Hill Road, Paget woman told Police she heard noises in her kitchen around 11 p.m on Thursday but when she went to investigate she found nothing.

She then walked through her home and noticed a light had been switched on.

When she screamed “I'm calling the Police”, she heard a door shut. She told Police nothing appeared to have been taken from her home.

Suspect searched

A suspect was searched near the area of a reported break-in and was found to have possible stolen property on him.

A Cobb's Hill home was burgled early on Friday morning and Police conducted a search of the surrounding areas on Harbour Road, Middle Road, and Ord Road.

They saw a man walking west along Middle Road near the junction of Longford Road, Warwick and searched him.

He is described as five feet ten inches tall and brown-skinned and was arrested at Hamilton Police Station.
