Teen shopper assaulted

An 18-year-old shopping in Gibbons Company was assaulted by two men who ripped a gold chain from his neck and got away on foot.

A female store clerk attempted to stop the altercation but was bruised on her chest as a result. At 4.25 p.m. on Thursday Police attended the disturbance on Reid St. On arrival the Police spoke with the victim who received abrasions on the face and neck but refused medical attention.

The suspects are believed to be in their late teens or early 20s with short plaits and of a stocky build. One was wearing a black short sleeved T-shirt and long black pants. The light-skinned male was wearing a purple, short-sleeved Fed-Ex shirt and dark coloured long pants. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing to any witnesses to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.

Christmas Eve attack

A 51-year-old Warwick man who was walking with a family member out of the Casey's Bar on Christmas Eve was struck in the back of the head and pushed to the ground by a man attempting to remove his wallet.

The incident occurred at the junction of Dundonald Street and Princess Street in Pembroke.

The thief had managed to get the man on the ground and remove the wallet containing $60 and other personal items.

When the victim's family member attempted to help he was punched in the mouth by the suspect.

The suspect then got away on foot. The victim was taken to King Edward VII Hospital for treatment to a cut on his head and released. The suspect is described as a dark skinned male, about 5ft 11-6 foot.

He was wearing a black or blue baseball cap with short hair.

He is believed to be in his 20s. Police are appealing for any other witnesses to this incident to contact the Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.

Firemen put out oven blaze

Firemen were alerted after a grease-filled stove caught alight.

They were called out to a North Shore Road, Pembroke, home at 6.49 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

“The premises was filled with quite a bit of smoke.

“We had to use smoke extractors to clear out the home. The only damage was in the oven,” said the Fire Department's Lt. Ronnie Aguiar.

“We used one extinguisher to put out the fire.”

He said there was a pot of grease near the stove and this served as a timely reminder for the public to “clean out their ovens around Christmas when people cook so much”.

“The Fire Department says to be careful,” he said.

Sneak thief takes wallet

An employee of a St. George's guest house had her wallet stolen from her desk by a thief who sneaked onto the property early on Wednesday afternoon.

Police were alerted about the theft from the Rose Hill Street guest property at 5.15 p.m. on Wednesday.

The complainant said her brown leather wallet was stolen from her desk.

Inquiries are under way.

Beware telephone tricksters

Members of the public are advised not to discuss their financial information over the telephone as the Police have received reports this week of individuals attempting to solicit money by claiming to be from reputable companies like Belco.

The Bermuda Police Service advises people not to discuss the information unless the person can verify they represent a legitimate business.

If in doubt, call the business and verify the person works there.
