Storms surround Island

There are two hurricanes and two tropical systems trawling the waters around Bermuda - but despite being surrounded, Bermuda doesn't appear to be a threatened by any of them.

Tropical Depression Lisa was 1,700 nautical miles southeast of Bermuda last night and not deemed a threat while Hurricane Karl was 1,080 nautical miles east of the Island and safely out of harm's way.

Meanwhile Hurricane Jeanne and Tropical Storm Ivan, which devastated much of the Caribbean, were menacing southern states in America, hundreds of miles to Bermuda's south west.

UK legislators visit

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK branch will be in Bermuda beginning on Sunday for a week-long fact-finding mission.

They will visit the Governor, the Premier, the leader of the Opposition and the mayors of Hamilton and St. George's as well as other local politicians and international business chiefs.

The group will also visit CedarBridge Academy and Sandys Middle School, Police and prison facilities, King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, the West End Development Corporation, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute and the Town of St. George's.

The group, hosted by the Bermuda Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), include Lord John Tomlinson from the ruling Labour Party and Lord Graham Tope from the Liberal Democrats and MPs David Crausby and Ian Davidson from the Labour Party, and David Amess and Richard Page from the Opposition Conservative Party.

Driver arrested

Police arrested a 56-year-old Devonshire man for impaired driving early yesterday morning after the bike he was riding collided with a parked cycle on Church Street.

The man was detained by a civilian passerby who called the Police.

The incident happened at around 2 a.m. and the man was not injured in the collision.

Home burgled

A Trimingham Hill, Paget residence was burgled on Tuesday.

The complainant told officers that between 10 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. an unknown culprit broke into her home and stole US $200 in cash.

Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Prowler arrested

A 43-year-old Warwick man was arrested for “acting in a suspicious manner” on Wednesday morning after a woman saw a prowler in her yard.

Police were called to the Middle Road, Paget, residence around 1.20 a.m. where the complainant told them she had seen a man with a flashlight walking around her property. Though officers immediately conducted a search of the property, they could not find the suspect.

Nevertheless, officers travelling along Middle Road a short time later observed a man acting in a suspicious manner.

He was subsequently arrested and taken to Hamilton Police station.
