Masked riders grab gold chain

A St. George's man was the victim of highway robbery on Wednesday when two men masked by scarves rode alongside his bike and ripped a gold chain from his neck.

The man was riding with his wife along Kindley Field Road at 9.45 p.m when the robbers, who were slim and dark-skinned, struck.

One wore a black shirt, blue jeans and a red scarf, the other wore a light blue shirt and a blue scarf.

The thin gold chain had a gold twin towers pendant, a gold Bermuda longtail pendant and the man's gold wedding band.

Witnesses should call St. George's CID on 297-1122.

A burglar stole $190 and jewellery after breaking into a Loyal Hill Road, Devonshire, home on Wednesday.

Poll: Most oppose BIU strike over Pro-Active

Eighty percent of respondents to a Royal Gazette online poll oppose a Bermuda Industrial Union strike over the Pro-Active dispute.

The union said last week that it would meet to decide further options - including a general strike - if it was unable to get a meeting with Government.

The dispute was referred to arbitration on Wednesday after former Registrar of Companies Malcolm Butterfield was brought in as a facilitator.

But 80.9 percent of the 656 people who took part in a www.theroyalgazette.com poll said they did not think the union should strike.

Just 12.2 percent said "yes" to the question: "Should the BIU strike over the Pro-Active dispute?" while 6.9 percent said they did not know.
