South Road to be closed in Paget

South Road in Paget will be closed between St. Paul's Road and the Paget traffic lights this weekend.

Bermuda Waterworks will be installing water pipes from 6 p.m. today until 6 p.m. tomorrow, unless the work is completed earlier.

One lane will be available for emergency vehicles and buses, while all other traffic will be diverted. Eastbound traffic will be diverted through St. Paul's Road, and westbound traffic is to use Middle Road, Ord Road and Cobb's Hill.

Police said the road will be re-opened prior to Monday morning commuter traffic. If the work needs to be postponed, it will occur next weekend.

Stove cleaner ignites in dryer

Greasy residue from cleaning stoves caught fire in a clothes dryer at Pink Beach Club, Fire service officials said.

The fire on Wednesday night occurred after staff had been cleaning stoves. Fire investigators verified that greasy residue on the linen had caught fire while spinning in the dryer.

Firefighters responding to the call at 9.14 p.m. found that a Club staff member had been able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. Fire personnel used a smoke extractor to clear the smoke-filled laundry room. The dryer is valued at $750.

The entire incident lasted for less than half an hour.

Drowning victim named

Police have released the name of the 73-year-old man who drowned on Tuesday while snorkelling off Horseshoe Bay beach.

The victim was John Ruehle of Lavonia, Georgia.

Mr. Ruehle, who was visiting the Island with his wife, was a guest at the Wyndham Resort.

Shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Police received a call alerting them that a swimmer was in distress.

Mr. Ruehle's unresponsive body was later pulled from the water and he was given CPR by individuals in the area.

He was rushed to the King Edward VII Memorial hospital via ambulance but died a short time later.

The Bermuda Police Service extended its condolences to Mr. Ruehle's family.
