The St. David's Historical Society is awaiting Planning approval to begin a construction project to enhance the entrance to Carter House ? the Island's oldest dwelling.

Rick Spurling, president of the society, said the project will see the flower centrepiece and plaque in front of the property removed and replaced with limestone walls adjusted to fit a Bermuda cedar gate.

The proposed change is part of an effort to recreate the house's original appearance.

Mr. Spurling said native and endemic plants will be planted around the gate and inside the house to enhance the experience of visitors who tour the centuries-old property.

Mr. Spurling said the renovations are expected to cost between $10,000 and $12,000.

Three road traffic accidents occurred at the Parsons Road and Roberts Avenue junction in the space of one hour earlier this week, Police report.

The causes of the accidents remain a mystery, however. The first mishap took place at around 9.30 a.m. when the woman driver of a car apparently lost control of the vehicle and ended up in the bushes over an embankment.

The car was extensively damaged but the woman, who had been trapped inside the car, escaped unharmed.

Details were not available on the other two accidents which occurred between 9.30 and 10.40 a.m. but Police reported that there were no reported injuries and that the Works and Engineering Department had been on hand to assess the condition of the road.

Repairs to the Bermuda International Airport should be completed next month ? almost oneyear to the date since Hurricane Fabian trashed the building.

James Howes, the airport's general manager, said he expects the repair work on the airport's first floor departures area and the canopied walkway to be ready by mid-September.

"The first floor departures area will have all new flooring tile and carpeting," he said, after noting that the entire first floor was ruined in the September 5, 2003 storm.
