Yacht captain resting in hospital general ward

The yacht captain who went berserk aboard a ship and threatened crew members has been put into a general hospital ward.

The 43-year-old Canadian reportedly threatened one crew member with a knife and tried to jump off the ship with another crew member during a nightmare voyage to Bermuda over the weekend.

The captain of the sloop Rembrandt had been admitted to the intensive care unit on Monday after crew had tied him up on the voyage from St. Martin, in the French Caribbean.

A spokeswoman for King Edward Memorial Hospital said yesterday his condition was satisfactory. One of the crew, a female nurse, said the captain had refused food and water for two days.

Fellow crewman Wojtek Slupek said that the captain reported hearing voices on Friday. He jumped overboard three times that day, once trying unsuccessfully to take Slupek with him.

Police warn thieves are on the prowl

Police are reminding the public to lock their homes as there were a spate of break-ins on Monday, most of them during the daylight hours. A man reported that someone had broken into his Spice Hill, Warwick home between the hours of 6.30 a.m. and noon. Among the items were several pieces of jewellery.

A second Warwick home was burglarised when a thief got away with $1,200. The occupants of the Pearman's Hill residence said that they returned from work at 6.45 p.m. only to discover that their house had been broken into.

A thief got away with a champagne-coloured Land Rider man's bicycle valued at $1,000 and several pieces of jewellery after breaking into a home on Cedar Craft Lane in Sandy's.

A Bostock Hill resident reported that someone smashed a window to gain entry to his home and stole $25 that was on a coffee table.
