Plane diverted because of drunken passenger

A flight destined for Germany had to be diverted to Bermuda at the weekend after a drunken female passenger became unruly.

The Lufttransport-Unternehem (LTU) aircraft was making its way from Cuba when it was forced to land on the Island at about 7.20 p.m. on Friday.

The woman was taken off the plane to enable it to continue its journey, and she was taken to Hamilton Police Station for questioning.

The passenger was then put on a British Airways flight over the weekend and sent on her way to Germany.

No charges are believed to have been brought.

Man arrested after two women assaulted

A Devonshire man is in custody after allegedly attacking two women while being armed with a sharp instrument.

The 38-year-old was arrested at a residence in the early hours yesterday and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

The two women, one believed to be a lot younger than the other, told Police the man had assaulted them.

They were both taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment to their injuries, which are not thought to be serious. The younger of the two suffered lacerations to her hands and received stitches. They were both released soon after.

The man was helping with inquiries last night.

Woman slashed in bottle attack

A woman suffered a one-inch gash to her face after being hit with a bottle in a West End nightspot at the weekend.

The victim told Police she was talking to her friends in the Showtime nightclub at Dockyard at about 1.55 a.m. on Saturday when another woman approached and began to verbally abuse and threaten her.

The victim began to walk away and was then hit in the face by a bottle.

The complainant was taken to Somerset Police Station, and advised to attend King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment to the cut and swelling on her face.

Inquiries are ongoing.

Family forced to abandon ship

A family jumped ship to safety at the weekend after the engine of their boat caught fire during a bank holiday fun trip out.

The couple grabbed their children and jumped overboard while anchored close to King's Point Island, at Mangrove Bay, on Saturday afternoon.

While the family were picked up by a passing boat, another man leapt to the rescue to extinguish the engine blaze.

The couple and their children were taken to Mangrove Bay Wharf, and their boat was towed to meet them soon afterwards.

No one was injured.
