Hospital talks planned

Government is set to have talks this week with the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) over its practice of allowing its expatriate Government psychiatrists to do outside work.

Home Affairs Minister Terry Lister said the BHB had allowed this because current budgets meant it was difficult to attract people to the Island if they couldn't top up their earnings.

Mr. Lister said: "We need to see if this is within the policy of the Immigration department. It's a question of whether they are engaged in self employment."

He hopes to have talks with the BHB before the end of the week.

Asked if it would be wise to increase salaries and ban the outside work, Mr. Lister said that would be the "healthy option" but it was a matter for the BHB.

BHB Chairman Jonathan Brewin said the practice of allowing psychiatrists to do outside work had been going on for around 20 years. The hospital employs four but it was not immediately clear how many are from overseas.

Gas station burgled

A burglar stole two bags of cash from the Van Buren Shell gas station in Flatts.

The complainant discovered the burglary when he opened the station on Sunday morning.

Police make arrests

Police and burglars were busy at the weekend.

On Friday, Police arrested a 41-year-old Hamilton Parish man and a 48-year-old Hamilton Parish man for cannabis possession while a Warwick and Southampton man were also picked up for drugs offences.

On the same day a 53-year-old St. George's man was arrested for possessing an offensive weapon while a 28-year-old Sandys Parish man was arrested for stealing two motorcycles.

On Saturday an 18-year-old St. George's man was arrested for cannabis possession and possession of an offensive weapon while a 25-year-old Devonshire man was arrested for possession of a controlled drug. Four men was also picked up for drunk driving over the weekend.

Girl saved

Fire crews were called out to deal with an eight-year-old girl who had candy stuck in her throat on Middle Road, near Five Star Island, Southampton on Saturday lunchtime.
