A Bermudian accused of stealing $1.9 million from the Government faces extradition proceedings to the US later this month after being released on $500,000 bail yesterday.

Harrison Isaac Jr., 34, of Crawl Point Lane, Hamilton Parish, is wanted in the US for wire fraud and access device fraud.

Proceedings in Bermuda have been dropped for the time being while the US authorities pursue the case.

Isaac, was an employee at the Accountant General's office and had been charged with the fraud of $1,904,988 some time between January 1, 2003 and April 15, 2004, and of money laundering.

After lengthy legal arguments Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner bailed Isaac to re-appear on July 27 for the extradition hearings.

Isaac was ordered to surrender travel documents, appear daily at Hamilton Police station and keep away from witnesses.

He was granted $500,000 bail with one like surety. His lawyer Richard Hector said last night he was working with his client to get someone to agree to act as a surety.

An October lower court trial has been set for a Pembroke man who is accused of perjury in relation to the Wellington Oval mele.

Antoine Anderson, 27, of St. Monica's Road, Pembroke was charged with perjury, or giving false testimony he did not believe to be true, namely over the identification of defendants between May 25-26, 2004 during the Wellington Oval trial.

He was also charged with violently resisting arrest by P.c. Jason Smith on May 26, outside Magistrates' Court after his aborted testimony.

When asked how he wished to plead by Senior Magistrate Archie Warner, Anderson said not guilty, then added: "He beat me up".

Mr. Warner set a trial date for Anderson in Magistrates' Court on October 4. His bail was extended.

Lawyer Mark Pettingill will represent Anderson at his trial.

Anderson's father, Herbert Santucci, also appeared in court with him the following week and was also charged with obstructing the duties of P.c. Smith.

A 31-year-old Southampton man pleaded not guilty to five charges, including assaulting an officer, at Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Laurie Furbert of Camp Hill, denies he refused to give his name and address after he was pulled over for speeding on June 16.

Furbert was additionally accused of having telecommunications equipment in his car without the necessary permit.

Furbert denied that he assaulted Insp. Stephen Donnelly and that he violently resisted arrest. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner released Furbert on $1000 bail and set his trial for September 28.

Stern words for delinquent fine payer

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner yesterday accused a 20-year-old Paget man of having "no regard for this court" for not paying his fines.

Aaron James of Bostok Hill pleaded guilty to speeding on May 30 and received a $280 fine or 28 days in prison.

It also came to court's attention that he had not paid two previous fines for driving without a license and driving with a helmet that was not properly fastened. These fines were due to be paid last March.

James told the judge that he was working now and could afford to pay off all his fines. Mr. Warner was adamant that the court does not allow people to pay fines "at your own sweet time". James must pay all three fines by August 20 or go to prison.

A 30 year-old Paget woman lost control of her vehicle, due to wet conditions around 10 a.m. yesterday and collided with a wall on Middle Road, Southampton, near Five Star Island.

The single vehicle accident caused the woman's car to land on its roof. It was extensively damaged but the woman only sustained minor abrasions and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police are making an appeal for any eyewitnesses to a serious road traffic accident last Saturday morning to come forward with information.

The accident involved a car and a van near the junction of Victoria Street and Court Street in Pembroke on July 10 at 4.45 a.m. A 60-year-old Devonshire woman and a 23-year-old Paget man were seriously injured as a result.

Police are especially interested in speaking to anyone who saw one of the victims Wolde Bartley, between Friday, July 9 in the late evening and Saturday, July 10 prior to the incident.
