The Bermuda Land Development Company (BLDC) is working with the Planning Department to ensure the former baselands are zoned in a way that will best benefit Bermuda.

Questions have been raised regarding the Island-wide Development Plan Review (DPR), which will not be completed until 2006, and the potential sale of the baselands to a developer.

The DPR is a review of the 1992 Bermuda Planning Statement which will help create policies and proposals to guide Island-wide development.

With its completion date some time away, however, the Planning Department ? which is conducting the review ? is working with the BLDC to ensure the baselands are zoned appropriately.

If the land was sold to a developer for a housing development, for example, and the DPR later zoned it as a no-housing area, that could present some problems for the developer and Government.

But Works and Engineering Permanent Secretary Derrick Binns said last week: ?Given the significance of the land at Morgan?s Point, I would be shocked if Planning came up with something overly restrictive.?

And Planning assistant director John Lawson confirmed his department was working with the BLDC to ensure zoning for the baselands was ?compatible? with future plans for the area.
