Blocked drain caused flooding at Speciality Inn

A car park that is part of the ongoing Collector?s Hill road safety improvements has been flooded twice in the last week.

One of the businesses impacted, Speciality Inn restaurant, said a heavy downpour last Friday led to its car park getting waterlogged.

A manager at the restaurant said a drain might have been covered up when one-way work and resurfacing was carried out as part of the safety upgrade at the dangerous South Road junction.

?The car park was completely flooded for about six to eight hours. It was hitting our business because Friday is our busiest day.?

Water trucks were brought in on Friday afternoon to pump the water away.

She said that as Government engineers worked on the drainage problem this week they seemed to ?hit something? that caused the car park ? also used by supermarket and pharmacy customers ? to flood again on Wednesday. This time ?white water? ? what seemed to be a mix of water and sand flooded the ca park.

?It was a bit inconvenient although it was resolved (by Works and Engineering) in timely fashion,? said the manager. ?Nothing was damaged.?

The road improvement scheme started in January. But it came to a halt and only recently restarted after hitting a stumbling block over negotiations with one of six landowners involved.

No response by a Government spokesperson were received by presstime last night.
