Two prominent trials had to be adjourned yesterday due to complications with the victims' impact statements.

In Supreme Court yesterday Acting Justice Acting Charles-Etta Simmons had to adjourn and reschedule the sentencing of Tyrone Brangman. Brangman, 16, pleaded guilty to robbing and causing grievous bodily harm to 77-year-old Josie Ray when he violently mugged her on February 7 of this year.

The defendant, who is on remand at the Co-ed facility, will be sentenced today in order to allow Justice Simmons and defence counsel Peter Farge, more time to go over the victim's impact statement which was filed by Mrs. Ray's step daughter.

As a result of the attack, which was carried out at the Southampton Post Office, Mrs. Ray suffered from irreparable brain damage and has been in a coma on life support with no hopes of recovering.

In another sentencing which was rescheduled yesterday, Dana Martin, 43, of Home Port Drive, Hamilton Parish will have to return to Supreme Court in late August in order to learn his fate.

In May Martin, a former Bermuda Housing Corporation employee, pleaded guilty to four counts of cheating a total of $158,000 from two victims who invested in his fraudulent venture scheme. Martin's lucrative scam was carried out over a five month period in 1999 in order to pay off the his outstanding debts. At the time, Martin's lawyer said, Martin had a gambling problem.

Sentencing had to be adjourned in order to give defence counsel Patrick Doherty, more time to go over the victim's impact statement, which had been filed late.
